Crucibles

If the casting material requires a melting temperature of above 1500 degrees F, then a crucible made of refractory (clay) material should be used. These can be purchased from a foundry or a foundry supply dealer. Since I only use the low melting point materials (Aluminum, Pot Metal and Lead), I use an iron pot for a crucible. The pots I use are selected based on the amount of material required. This may be figured by calculating the pattern (and sprue) volume and then using a pot which will contain this volume. Add 25% to be safe and for slag. NEVER run short of melt when pouring.
Picture The figure shows the three different size crucibles I have. The majority of small patterns can be poured with the 4" frying pan. These cast iron pans melt at 2000 deg F. Notice what happened when I applied to much heat to one in the upper middle. The two larger pots were made from mild steel. I have not used the larger one yet. The pouring handle was made to adapt to both the frying pan and the middle size pot. The lid is designed to fit all three.
