Foundry Patterns

The first requirement for casting anything is to have a pattern of what is desired. Almost all of my patterns are made of wood that is pieced together and filled with wood putty to produce the desired shapes. Some one time only castings such as a trigger for my weedwacker were made by using the broken plastic trigger (reglued together) for the pattern.

Picture The sundial patterns consist of a dial face and the gnomen separately. The hour labels on the dial face pattern are cut from 1/16" balsa wood sheets and glued to the face. The hour lines are monofilament fishing line woven through small holes drilled in the face.
Three coats of varnish were used and when dried provide the draft for the labels and lines as shown.Picture
